This documentation accompanies the distributed WorldWideWeb software. It contains information regarding the source code, directory structures, and installation procedures for the various browsers and server daemons within the project.
Note: This file is an abridged version of the information available directly on the web. If in doubt, read the web master-data via telnet to info.cern.ch.
Archive Directory Structure
Under the /pub/www root, you will find bin, src, and doc directories. Key archives include:
src/WWWLibrary_v.vv.tar.Z- The common W3 Library. Contains all source and Makefiles for supported systems.
src/WWWLineMode_v.vv.tar.Z- The Line Mode Browser source. Requires the Common Library to compile.
src/WWWDaemon_v.vv.tar.Z- The HTTP daemon and WWW-WAIS gateway programs.
bin/xxx/bbbb- Executable binaries for specific systems. (Note: HP systems are historically labeled as "snake").
Browser Installation
NeXTStep Browser/Editor
The application for the NeXT is located in WWW/Next/Implementation/WorldWideWeb.app. When installing the app, ensure the default.html points to useful local or global information. We recommend keeping this up to date with pointers to your specific site resources and elsewhere.
Line Mode Browser
If a binary exists for your system, download it along with the WWWLineModeDefaults.tar.Z documentation. Link the documentation directory into /usr/local/lib/WWW and place the www executable in your path.
Viola Browser for X11
To generate Viola from source, you will need the W3 library and the Viola source files. You must generate the XPA and XPM libraries and the W3 library before making Viola itself.
General Participation
Your comments on the code or documentation are appreciated. If you write your own hypertext and make it available via a server, inform the project team so we may add pointers to it. Thus spreads the web...
